Twenty Five and a Fashion Disaster

There it is...staring at me...in my inbox:

Tickets are on sale for my 25th High School Reunion

SIGH

How could 25 years have passed?  I am sitting here thinking... WOW I feel old!  For the record I graduated in 1986.

We actually had a 20th Reunion - right about the same time everyone started using Facebook.  I feel like I am all caught up with my long lost classmates.  So do I want to go?

And then there is the question:  What will I wear???   And WORSE - it is next month.

This is what I remember wearing 25 years ago: (can you find me??)

Ahhh the 1980s!  Are those white gloves??  Has anyone seen my waist since then?  Surely, I am not a size 8 anymore either.

So there are options.

There is the Little Black Dress route:

Or in another color?

OR I could mix it up and do a blouse with a skirt or slacks (did I just date myself with that word?).  I am a fan of CABi Clothing... I have this:
)
I also have this number that has been hanging in the back of the closet:

I cannot even get started on shoes with any of these looks.  As a sufferer of plantar faciitis this is the part I dread the most.   I also will need to employ my fabulous fashion accessory SPANX with my final choice.

As I decide whether or not to purchase tickets - I will spend time going through my closet and many trips to the mall trying to figure this all out.

WHAT would YOU wear!?!?!?  Leave me a comment!

Rosie the Roomba

Having had two golden retrievers for years in the Little Red House  -  my Roomba floor vacuum, affectionately named 'Rosie', was a prized possession.

The girls got the biggest kick out of her.   However, after the dogs passed on, she became older and less reliable.  You could say we wore her out but she was always loved by the girls.

I just happened to video the girls in 2009 'unplugging' her.  I cannot watch this video with out cracking up. I do hope you can see the humor and look past their sadness.   I can assure you they quickly recovered.

Fast Forward to 2011:

NOW with Nora in the house we are living in the land of dog hair again.  It was time.  Meet Bob!  We decided to give this one a male name.  Lulu picked Bob.  It stuck.

I am happy to report that Bob is doing a great job at getting those floors clear of dog hair daily.  And that the girls are not as 'attached' to this Roomba as they were in the past.

He thought of me...

The Mr. surprised me with a wonderful treat last night.  He must have known I had nothing for the center of my dining room table!

SO now when you walk into the Little Red House kitchen door - the first thing you see is these on my dining room table:

Such pretty fall colors!

I should note... these came from a Golf Fundraiser that he played in.  Sigh.  I guess the fact that he brought them home FOR me is what matters - right??

I am taking a break for the long Columbus Day Weekend.  We have a New England Day trip planned and LOTS of soccer.  Will be back soon!

Who ME????

Check out The Kurtz Corner - I was FEATURED!~!

This was just the pick me up I needed on this COLD Fall afternoon!

THANK YOU !!!

"Treat Free" School Birthdays

I won't go on a tangent about how I feel about 'treats in school'.  Whether I am pro or against does not matter.  Our school this year changed its policy for 'treats' during the day.  This affects birthdays.

I came up with a solution that pleased my daughter Lulu as her 9th Birthday just recently passed.  Apparently, in 3rd Grade you want everyone to know it is your birthday.  I for one do not feel this way about MY birthday anymore!

I have some wonderful friends who recently started a business called LeeLee Street.

They offered me the perfect solution for Lulu and her class.

Chocolate Cupcake shaped crayons - I'm not food, don't eat me

That is right - they are crayons!  They are NOT sweets!

It was a very exciting day for Lulu to pass these out.  I am happy to have been able to make her so happy!

I have seen a lot of molded crayons out there but I will say the quality of these impress me the most.  They have some exciting shapes that I love - allow me to share some of my favorites:

Brick shaped crayons - just keep building, just keep building
Star shaped crayons - twinkle twinkle
Mustaches - but I can't pay the rent, but you must pay the rent

What fun!  Take a stop over to their Etsy Shop and poke around.  You might even see some funny faces!

Oreo Madness

Popcorn & Oreos?

I tripped upon a wonderful popcorn post I saw at Darling Doodles (the recipe can be found here at  Sing for Your Supper)

AND when I saw THESE at the grocery - I knew I had the perfect occasion to make this Oreo Popcorn Madness!

Saturday night we hosted Lulu's 9th Birthday Sleepover.  I slipped a bowl of this halloween colored treat on the table and I could hear them all discussing it.  Yes, they liked it!

Ready, Set, Bake!

Gathering of all the ingredients -  only 3!

Chopped the Oreos, melted the chips and tossed all into a bowl.  Spread it all out on a cookie sheet - and into the fridge it went to cool.

Then broke it all down into bite size pieces and.... YUM!

It was sweet and salty.  Just right for a sweet bite. And - the Fall colors were perfect!!

The Gray Factor

Or I could have titled this:

The White Factor
The Silver Factor
The Salt and Pepper Factor (not to be confused with the musical group Salt n' Pepper from the 80s)

Either way there is no way around it - it is all about the same thing....  CHANGE.

When I was little, I was the little Irish girl who had the dark curly black hair with the pale white skin.  My lucky daughter Lulu inherited my coloring.

It was about 1985 when I remember pulling my first few grays: one during cheer leading practice, one during a sleepover, one during history class.  Yes, I was 17 years old.

When I was about 22 my hairdresser told me - it was probably time to consider hair color.  Just to blend them in.  But one thing was clear at this point - they were WHITE.  And stood out against my dark hair.

I know that I did not color my hair during my pregnancies (because I was told not to) and I know I went back to color soon after.  As the girls aged - so did I.

I am thinking it was about 5 years ago that I started skipping summers.  Why spend the money when I would not be seeing people.  I was pre-scheduling my color appt. for the first day of school.   And each year it got harder and harder to cover the white after the break.  I should also mention that my eyebrows and arm hair have also gone mostly 'white'.  I also have this weird problem where the ENDS of my hair are whiter than my roots.  I am sure this is from my refusal to use permanent color as I only use Demi Permanent.

Pictures from that era:

2011

Fast forward to my 43rd year.

July 2, 2011 I had my last demi color.  Family was coming into town and I wanted to look my best.  But for some reason when I left that appt. I did not feel my best.  I felt like I was covering up the real me.  I don't know why it was THIS visit I felt this way but I did.  My little voice in side said 'I think it's time'.

SO I came home and attacked this like I do anything else - I researched.  I read books, read websites, talked to  people.  I would stop people in the stores to tell them how beautiful I found their white hair. People would tell me 'you are too young' but I simply was craving the change.  I feel it was meant to be.

I stopped coloring after that appt.  In fact, the hardest thing I ever did was tell my stylist 'no more'.  That meant it was happening.

SO here I am posting - 2 months into no color for the first time in 22 years:

And here at 3 months:

I have some observations to share:
  • I had no idea how light my hair had become with color.  With the regrowth I see my natural dark hair color that I missed.  My 'coloring' seems back to normal.
  • I am no longer obsessed with 'color' preserving products
  • My girls begged me not to do this.  Yet oddly they have not commented since I started.
  • I have CRAZY white ends of my hair.
  • I do need to have my hair 'deep conditioned' as those curly whites have a mind of their own some days.
  • Right now a pony tail is NOT my best friend.
  • People look at my hair when they are talking to me - but they do not ask or say anything LOL
  • I think I look my age (whether that is good or bad is up to those looking at me) and I feel confident.
  • I kind of like it!

I had secretly hoped to be one of those 'streaky' or 'chunky' or it all looks like 'highlights' kind of girls.  You know- cool white hair (oxymoron?).  But alas, it is a pretty steady Salt and Pepper (my Mom's words).  Nothing to be excited or complain about but my temples do seem to be a pretty solid white.  I would kill for that silky straight white hair however, I embraced my curls years ago.

Temples:

And, WHITE is the color I would use to describe it.  Sometimes it it glitters like silver.

The next step in the process is to decide if I cut it shorter eventually.  I am more worried about needing to cut it to help with the grow out line than I am making this change.  I just do not know if I can do it but you will be the first to know!!!

YUP that is a LOT OF WHITE!!!  Close up of my 'ends'

One year ago with fresh color but those crazy ends are still white!

NOTE:  I view this as a 'let's see what it looks like experiment.  I reserve the right to go back on my words at any time and change my plans.  Yes, I could change my mind!
