Pink Tea Cup Dress

Just in the nick of time - I have finished my LAST sewing project for Christmas.  I may sneak one more thing in - but this was a big one.

I had a computer glitch and I have LOST the website I took this free tutorial from.  My apologies to the author of this wonderful tutorial.  I also at the same time picked up this book:

Little Girls, Big Style: Sew a Boutique Wardrobe from 4 Easy Patterns
Which shows the instructions for the same dress.

I found the most adorable tea cup fabric and paired it with a small pink heart and vines fabric.  I used a pale green thread for the top stiching.  It will be perfect for Niece E who all about pink and ruffles.

This took me a morning and some of the afternoon to cut and sew.  It uses button holes for the ties.  I always am afraid to do buttonholes - but my machines always handles them like magic!

I think it will be adorable as the weather turns warmer.  BUT I am hopeful that she can wear it with tights and a turtleneck before Winter is over.

I cannot WAIT to try some of the other dresses and tops in the Little Girls/Big Style book.  Very cute things!!

Fabulous Friday: Afternoon Delight!

coffee coffee coffee
(source: Pinterest)

I have to blame this all on a friend.  It is her fault.  I was quite content with just canned evaporated fat free milk in my coffee as creamer.

Then I bought this:

after her telling me that she had some of this:
International Delight Presents: Peppermint Mocha
Now I am on the lookout for hers too!

Warm, creamy, wonderfulness!

I just wish it was the real thing!

More Ruffles!

Seeing as I am an expert at ruffles now I had a little more energy to fancy up some my favorite microfiber towels.

Pressure Cooking: A FROZEN Bird!

A new cook book I pre-ordered just arrived.  It is Bob Warden's Great Food Fast - and it is ALL Pressure Cooking!! I spent the weekend thumbing through trying to decide which recipe to try first.
"Bob Warden's Great Food Fast" Cookbook
One thing that he updated well in this book is frozen cooking times.  There is a chart that tells you how long to add on if you use frozen beef or chicken breasts and even a WHOLE roaster bird.  Guess what I had in the freezer.

I put a frozen solid whole chicken in the pressure cooker.  I added some spices, chicken broth & 2 tbsp of white wine.  Once it got up to 40 PSI I cooked it for 25 mins + 15.

Then I checked it - it was up to 160 degrees.  Popped it back in for another 10 mins and it was  D O N E !!  60 mins total.  Did I mention it was frozen solid?  I find that my cooker takes at least 10 mins. to get up to pressure.

No, it does not look like a 'roasted chicken' but that was not the purpose of cooking it today.  Had it not been frozen I could have taken the time to brown it on the breast a bit.

I plucked all that soft white cooked chicken off the bone then popped it back IN the pressure cooker with carrots, celery & onion.  Covered it with water - and 15 mins (+10 to heat up) I had Homemade Chicken Stock!!

Yes, I went from frozen bird in my basement freezer to homemade chicken noodle soup in less than 2.5 hours!!

Ruffle Twirl Skirts

I am officially 'ruffled' out!

These are Christmas presents for my little nieces.  They are the same as the Christmas Twirl Skirt that I posted about HERE.

One of the skirts is for Niece M, who does NOT wear pink.  So, hers is blue and green.

The set is for Nieces A & G.  They are sisters and they love pink!

I am really struggling with wanting to do applique tshirts to go with the skirts but I fear I am running out of time.  I have other projects I need to finish also.  SO I may do hair accessories with the scrap fabric instead.

One thing I DID do, after I finished the Christmas Twirl Skirt, was purchase a 'gathering foot' for my machine.  It looks like this: Brother SA120 Gathering Foot
I am in love!  While it is not perfect (I still had to adjust all those ruffles to length) it really saved me a LOT of time.  I am suppose to be able to sew the ruffle to the flat piece at the same time but I did not trust my fabric lengths enough to go for it.  Someday?!?!

Have you worked with a Gathering Foot and had success??

Fresh Baked Bread

Yup, I did it... I made bread. First time this season - and it was WHITE bread - not whole wheat.

The kind when my girls walked in from school they said 'you made bread' just by the smell in the house.
The kind you eat with melted butter right when it is cool enough to slice.
The kind you toast the next morning with butter and strawberry preserves because you can.
The kind that has so many points on Weight Watchers you just don't write it down

I forget how easy and how little time it really takes to to make this from scratch. I this recipe it has never failed me.  It uses milk, so I can use Lactaid.

White Bread
Makes 1 loaf

3 1/2 cups bread flour
2 tsp salt
1 C warm milk (110º F)
1/3 C warm water (110º F)
2 tbsp butter, melted
3 tbsp honey
2 1/4 tsp rapid-rise yeast (1 package)

1. Adjust oven rack to low position and heat oven to 200ºF. Once oven reaches temperature, maintain heat 10 minutes, then turn off oven.

2. Mix flour and salt in bowl of standing mixer fitted with dough hook.
Mix milk, water, butter, honey, and yeast in a liquid measuring cup. (We use Lactaid Milk)
Turn machine on and slowly add liquid.
When dough comes together, increase speed to medium and mix until dough is smooth and satiny, about 10 minutes.

Turn dough onto lightly floured work surface; knead to form smooth, round ball, about 15 seconds.

3. Place dough in a very lightly oiled bowl, rubbing dough around bowl to lightly coat. Cover with plastic wrap; place in warm oven until dough doubles in size, 40 to 50 minutes.

4. Gently press dough into rectangle 1 inch thick and no longer than the length of your loaf pan. With a long side facing you, roll dough firmly into cylinder, pressing with your fingers to make sure dough sticks to itself. Turn dough seam side up and pinch it closed. Place dough in greased 9x5x3-inch loaf pan and press it gently so it touches all four sides of pan.

5. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm spot until dough almost doubles in size, 20 to 30 minutes.

Heat oven to 350º F (remove first if rising in oven) and place an empty loaf pan on bottom rack. Bring 2 cups water to boil.

6. Remove plastic wrap, and place loaf pan with dough into oven. Immediately pour heated water into empty loaf pan; close oven door. Bake until instant-read thermometer inserted at an angle from short end just above pan rim into center of loaf reads 195º F, about 40 to 50 minutes. Remove bread from pan, transfer to a wire rack, and cool to room temperature. Slice and serve.

It does not last long here.... but it is SO GOOD!

DECOR: Black Lab Silhouette Pillow

Julie over at Less than Perfect: Life of Bliss posted this pillow that just CALLED to me!  I was looking for something to sew for my Tween who is getting a new comforter set for Christmas.  But SHHHHHHH until then!!!

First, and this was the most important step - I emailed Julie and begged asked nicely for the image she used for her black dog.  She obliged!

Following her instructions - I used Heat and Bond to create the dog image in black felt.  Cutting the detail was the hardest part.

I also used Heat and Bond for the dog collar.

I decided on a 12x18 sized pillow for her bedtop.  Just the right size I think.

I pressed the dog image onto the fabric then inverted for pinning and sewing.

I also took a few minutes to try out a new 'overstitch' stitch on my machine which is SO COOL!! Thank you Elizabeth <3.

Right side and all sewn.

I always prefer to cover a pillow insert, however I stuffed this one with filler.

Maybe after Christmas I will make one for HERE!!  I LOVE this project!!
